Teeth – Count, Care, and Math

  • 🦷 How many teeth do we have?
    • 20 baby teeth
    • 32 adult teeth (including wisdom teeth)
  • 🪥 How to care for your teeth:
    • Brushing 2x per day
    • Flossing frequency
    • Dental check-up frequency (every 6 months)

    Math in Mouth Care

Let’s put some numbers into perspective:

  • 2 x 2 = 4 minutes of brushing per day
  • Flossing between 32 teeth = 31 gaps to clean!
  • A dentist sees 1 patient every 30–60 minutes, doing X-rays, scaling, and exams

🧮 Fun Math Fact:
If plaque builds up by 1mm per week and you skip brushing for 2 weeks, that’s 2mm of bacterial buildup—yuck!

🌱 Smart Habits for a Healthy Smile

  • Eat crunchy fruits and veggies (like apples and carrots)
  • Drink lots of water
  • Don’t use your teeth to open things
  • Wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3 months

🍬 The Sugar Equation: Eat Less Candy!

Sugar + Bacteria = Acid → Cavities

Every time you eat sugar, bacteria in your mouth use it to make acid that attacks your teeth.

Tips:

  • Limit sugary drinks and candy
  • Avoid sticky foods that cling to teeth
  • Drink water after eating sweets

Eyes – Vision by the Numbers

  • 👁️ How vision is measured:
    • 20/20 vision (what it means)
    • Nearsighted vs farsighted scores
    • Prescription strength (e.g., -2.00, +1.25)
  • 🧴 Eye care tips
    • Screen time limits
    • The 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
    • Avoid prolonged use of digital devices without breaks
    • Use blue light filters or night mode
    • Sleep and hydration impact on vision

🌿 How to Care for Your Eyes Daily

  1. Eat for your eyes
    • Carrots, spinach, fish (omega-3)
    • Vitamins A, C, and E help preserve vision

  1. Protect your eyes outdoors
    • Wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection
    • Avoid looking directly at bright lights

  1. Stay hydrated
    • Dry eyes are often caused by dehydration
    • Drink enough water daily (about 8 glasses)

📊 Fun Eye Facts and Numbers

  • The eye blinks ~15–20 times per minute → that's 28,000 blinks/day!
  • Each eyeball is about 1 inch in diameter
  • Your retina has over 100 million light-sensitive cells
  • The eye can distinguish over 1 million colors

🧮 Math Moment:
If you spend 6 hours on a screen without a break, and you blink half as much (10 times per minute), you’ve blinked 3,600 fewer times than normal—dry, tired eyes!

Foot care

Take care of you teeth

🦶 Why Foot Care Matters

Your feet are your foundation. They carry the weight of your entire body and allow you to walk, stand, run, and balance. Neglecting them can lead to pain, poor posture, and even complications like infections or joint problems.

📏 Measurable Foot Facts

  • Each foot has 26 bones
→ That’s 52 bones in both feet, or ¼ of all the bones in your body!
  • 33 joints, 100+ muscles, tendons, and ligaments support each foot.
  • The average person takes about 8,000–10,000 steps per day, which equals:
    • 3.6 million steps per year
    • Over 100,000 miles in a lifetime (that’s 4 trips around the Earth!)

🧮 Math Moment:
If you walk 5,000 steps a day, that’s 35,000 steps per week. Multiply that by the average stride length (~2.5 feet), and you're walking nearly 16.5 miles a week on just your feet!

🧼 Daily Foot Care Routine

  1. Wash daily with soap and water
  2. Dry thoroughly
  3. Moisturize your soles
    • Avoid applying lotion between toes to prevent fungal infection.

Check your feet

  • Look for cuts, blisters, or changes in skin color—especially important for people with diabetes.

👟 Proper Footwear Tips

  • Measure your feet every year—foot size can change with age.
  • Choose shoes with ½ inch space between your longest toe and the shoe tip.
  • Wear shoes appropriate for the activity: walking, running, hiking, etc.
  • Replace athletic shoes every 300–500 miles or about every 6 months if used regularly.

🧦 Sock Sense

  • Use moisture-wicking socks to avoid sweat buildup.
  • Change socks daily—or more often if you're active.
  • Avoid tight elastic bands that reduce circulation.
